Chagall is a Russian born French painter and developed a poetic, amorphous, and deeply personal visual language throughout his career, visible in this painting. He was seen as an early modernist, and associated with quite a few major artistic styles. This happy couple at the Eiffel was painted in 1938 / 1939, when he lived in Paris and actively engaged with the artistic community there. His images and work is truly unique and very personal. He famously said: "If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing."
This well-known painting has a very joyful, optimistic and happy mood associated with it and there are also a few of Chagall's favourite things depicted here: violin playing goat, a rooster, a happy couple floating through the air, angels, Paris and Vitebsk (depicted by the houses in the bottom right corner). He had a deep love for both cities and often painted images of both.
